Surely you’re familiar with the eternal debate between dog lovers and cat lovers, but what about other types of pets like guinea pigs, fish and reptiles? Can the type of animal you choose as a companion really tell others something about your personality?
Of course, there are several factors that are considered in a pet parent’s choice of pet, from allergies, to work schedule, to living arrangements, to financial situation, and more. But numerous studies and surveys have shown a correlation between the type of pet a person chooses and that person’s lifestyle, personality, and even career.
Career
A few years ago, a survey was conducted that attempted to pinpoint which type of pet survey participants in various jobs were most likely to have. Company CEOs, IT professionals, professors, military members, entertainers and nurses were more likely to have dogs. Whereas realtors, machine operators, doctors, personal caretakers and lab technicians often had cats. Those who worked in the hotel industry, the financial field, farming, human resources, transportation, or fishing/forestry tended to have fish as pets. People working in administrative positions, construction, sales and advertising were more likely to have birds as pets. And, finally, reptiles were the pet of choice for writers, engineers, marketing professionals, police officers, editors and social workers. The survey also found those making a six-figure salaries were more likely to choose a snake or reptile over a cuddly kitten or pup.
Personalities
So what does your pet a choice say about your personality? Once again, various surveys and studies have been conducted with findings so detailed it may amaze you. In general, pooch parents were found to be more honest, conscientious and religious, while those with cats are more independent, happier in their careers and socially conscious. Meanwhile, those with fish as pets are non-materialistic, optimistic and introverted.
Now, when you break down the findings even more, by dog breed, it gets even more interesting! People with Beagles were found to be inquisitive, loyal and stubborn; Cocker Spaniel pet parents are family-oriented, gentle, playful, nurturing and affectionate; those who prefer Golden Retrievers are often social butterflies; Chihuahua pet parents tend to be hyperactive mischief makers; and Poodle parents are often detail-oriented and have an appreciation for art and culture.
On the feline side, it was found that Persian cat parents are homebodies; those with Siamese cats are great communicators; Calico and Tortoiseshell lovers are family-oriented and live in well-decorated homes; Abyssinian parents are creative and flexible; people who share their home with a Burmese cat often enjoy entertaining at home; Russian Blue and American shorthair cat parents are independent, affectionate and self-reliant; and those with Maine Coons are extremely family-oriented.
Not Everyone is Created Equal
Of course, the results of these surveys and studies don’t apply universally to every pet parent. There are plenty of outgoing Persian parents and introverted Golden Retriever lovers. The truly important thing is the bond between each pet and his pet parent is a bond that can be, and usually is, just as strong as one between humans, and equally rewarding.
