Author, Professional Pet Sitting Etc.
As the New Year rolled around, you might have made some health and wellness resolutions for yourself as well as the two-legged members of your family. Diet and exercise is a top concern for many people this time of year but what about the four-legged members of your family – particularly, your dog or cat? Have you set some resolutions for your pet companions? If not, you just might want to consider taking a close look at what you are feeding your pet. The Raw Pet Food diet is becoming increasingly more popular, especially as we humans learn more and more about the health benefits. Read on to learn more.
Always research everything thoroughly and speak with your veterinarian to make sure this would be a good alternative for your pet. Pets with food allergies have done very well on raw diets, as well as other health related problems. Felines need specific ingredients to keep them healthy, more so that your canine.
What’s in a raw food diet, anyway? It may consist of –
- Fruit
- Dairy
- Eggs
- Vegetables
- Muscle meat
- Whole or ground bones
- Organ meat
- Supplements
Why should I consider feeding a raw diet?
First and foremost, a raw diet allows you, as your pet’s protector and advocate, to have complete control. What do I mean? Well, with a raw food diet, you will know exactly what you are putting in your pet’s bowl. With commercial foods, there are so many different ingredients and additives that it’s not uncommon to become completely confused as to what you really feeding your pet. If your pet becomes ill or has a reaction of some sort, it can be very hard to really pin-point the problem because you don’t’ really know what you are feeding.
Second of all, some commercial foods may not be the healthiest option. Why? Well, some of these products have cheap fillers like rice by-products, corn, and animal by products. Not to mention the salt. These cheap fillers and additives can lead to major health problems! Heart disease, obesity, cancer, diabetes, tartar build up…you get the idea?
Finally, a raw diet can promote health and general well-being. Just like their human counterparts, all pets need to eat a well-balance diet. Think – food groups. A raw diet leads to a nice shiny coat, strong bones, and lean muscle. These are all things you would want for yourself, right? Your pet should be no different.
Whether you choose a raw diet for your pet or not, you should always be educated about the product you are feeding. A good diet will lead to a long, healthy lifestyle, which we all want for our pets. The added bonus will be less money out of pocket to your vet.
