As a NH Pet Sitting Company
that has clients who
love their pets more then life,
I was horrified to learn that something
like this exists in today’s world.
Author, Dorinne Whynott, Owner of Professional Pet Sitting Etc.
I was invited to a seminar about two different breeds of dogs (Galgos and Podencos), and their plight in Spain. Galgos and Podencos are very similar to our Greyhounds and are referred to as the Spanish Hunting Greyhound. They are used for hunting to just win trophies.
These dogs are housed in deplorable conditions, usually not fed to keep them hungry for hunting, if one dies its left to feed the rest, if they do not perform well they are thrown out on the streets or hung with their back legs just touching the ground so it takes days to die, this is used as punishment for not doing well!!
One person, Tina, decided she just had to do something. Tina started Galgos Del Sol. She spends her days chasing down starving half dead dogs, who are scared and abused. This group has grown to just a handful of passionate people. They are making painstakingly slow headway, rescuing, adopting to the US and other countries. Tina was sponsored to fly to the US from Spain with 6 dogs who were adopted by US families! They are now in their forever homes. She was invited to speak at Fast Friends in Keene (Greyhound Rescue) and that is where I was lucky enough to meet her.
Tina’s organization is trying to educate and change decades of thinking by locals, that it’s okay to treat these amazing dogs like this. These passionate people have used their own money to rescue, feed and house the rescues but also to buy billboards with educational lines.
They need help, of course money will help to do all of the things I just stated above but they also need people to help with making educational videos to get the word out. If you would like to donate money, wish list items on Amazon or time to help create videos, please contact them through their Facebook page or website. Thank you for helping.

Here is their Facebook page address and description:
Galgos del Sol is a small rescue based in Murcia, Spain that rescues abandoned and injured galgos (Spanish hunting greyhounds), rehabilitates them and finds them forever homes in the UK and other parts of Europe. Thousands of galgos are abandoned or killed annually at the end of each short hunting season and as they are not always viewed as potential pets in Spain, they usually end up in perreras (pounds), where their lives are ended, often not in ways we would consider humane. Galgos del Sol is entirely dependent on fundraising for its survival and is run by two dedicated women, Tina and Gaynor, assisted by a group of dedicated volunteers based in Spain, France and in the UK.
Please let me know your thoughts. Were you aware of Spain’s treatment of animals? Were you surprised?
