Pets in Need

How can you help

*

Author, Dorinne Whynott, Owner of Professional Pet Sitting Etc.

When you think of pets in need, most people think of humane societies, humane shelters and rescues.  There certainly are many pets in need in those facilities and organizations.  However, adopting a pet is not the only way you can help pets in need.  There are lots of ways you can help these organizations and more.

Here is how –

ADOPT –

This is always a way to help a pet in need.  If you are ready to add a new furry love to your family, by all means adopt.  The added love in your home will be well worth it.  But there are many things you can do besides adopting.

FOSTER –

Here is a way to help many pets.  I foster orphaned kittens for a shelter.  These kittens could be orphaned and still nursing, they could be too young to vaccinate and therefore can not go into a shelter where they would be susceptible to many diseases.  If you have room and time to care for an orphan kitten or puppy, it is rewarding.  Many organizations also need help with pregnant moms (cats and dogs).  The shelter is not a place for a pregnant mom, too much going on, too stressful, etc.  They need a quiet, warm home where they can finish their pregnancy, deliver their babies and care for their babies until they are ready to be adopted.

DONATE MONEY –

Every organization can make your dollar stretch to help the animals in their care.  This is always a great way to help your local organization.

TRAIN –

If you know how to train the basics, many shelters would love to have the dogs trained in basic – sit, down, come, stay.  Dogs that are trained are always a plus to be adopted.

SOCIALIZE –

All the cats and dogs need love and attention.  Maybe you can just sit and give them attention.  The animals need it. Sitting and brushing or petting an animal not only de-stresses that animal but also de-stresses YOU.   Many shelters have socialization programs.

DONATE NEEDED ITEMS –

Paper Towels (they go through cases)

Trash bags

Kitty Litter (call the organization to find out if they use a certain kind, many organizations like to use one kind for consistency for the cats.)

Food – dog, cat, kitten, puppy, dry or canned.  This is always in need.  (Call the organization to find out if they use a certain kind, many organizations like to use one kind for consistency for the pets.)

Towels, blankets, sheets (new or used)

Newspaper

Small boxes (That cans are packed in.  They can be used as litter boxes)

Toys

Treats

Brushes and other grooming items

Stainless steel bowls

Shelving Units (heavy duty on wheels for storage)

CARE FOR A FERAL COLONY –

Many shelters do a trap-neuter-release.  Volunteers are needed to help bring food on a daily basis.  Making warm shelters is also needed.  Making sure that people do not harm them or poison them.
