How to Get Amazing Shots of Your Pets

Who wouldn’t like to capture an amazing shot of their pet, frame it and hang it on their wall for all to admire? After all, your pet IS the cutest there is, right? But cute doesn’t equal cooperative, and getting you four legged friend to sit still for a posed shot can be quite the chore. Not to mention capturing a blur-free, motion shot… nearly impossible! The task can be a daunting one, often leaving you – the photographer – disappointed and frustrated. If only your pet understood the commands “smile,” “look left,” and “say cheese.”
Seeking that Picture Perfect Pet?
If that is your goal, here are a few handy dandy tips that may bring you closer to success:
- Get acquainted. Take out your camera and let your pet have a look and a sniff. Some pets can be extremely camera shy; not because they don’t want their photo taken, but because they don’t like the sound the camera makes, or an unknown object being so close. Give your pet time to get used to the shutter click and the camera itself.
- Just say no to digital zoom. If your camera has a zoom lens, use it! Your pet will feel much more comfortable without your camera getting up close and personal. If you can, turn off the digital zoom option, as it is simply a means of blowing up a picture without bringing it closer or capturing more detail. Optical zoom actually brings you closer to the subject – your perfect pet – and is much more important when it comes to photo quality.
- The right light. Natural light makes for the best pet photos. Ideal times to photograph your pet are early morning or just before dusk, when the sun isn’t too bright.
- Motivation is key. Motivate your pet by showing her favorite toy or treat. What dog can resist a cute head tilt when hearing her favorite squeaky toy? And what cat won’t look in the direction of her nemesis, the laser pointer? Promise your pet good tidings in exchange for a pretty pose and you’ll both be pleased with the outcome.
- Background. Be aware of your background, as a cluttered background will take away from your furry subject. It’s also helpful to be in an area with no distractions, like a dog park or a crowded beach.
- Get low. You’re likely a good 5+ feet taller than your pet. Shooting down on her takes away from the picture, so get down to her level. For small fur babies, this may mean getting down on all fours, or even lying on your stomach. You may be uncomfortable for a few seconds, get a bit dirty, and hear your bones popping as you stand back upright, but capturing your pet from a unique angle will totally be worth it all.
- Be patient! Chances are you’ll have to take many, many photos to get a few good ones.
- Edit. After your photo session, peruse all your pics and decide which ones are keepers. Focus on your pet’s body language and expression; don’t fret if there’s something in the background you don’t like – you can always crop it out. Looking for a simple photo editor? - Know your pet. Over time you’ll learn what does and does not work when photographing your furry friend. During the learning process, just be sure to keep it fun, stress-free and enjoyable for you both. After all, no one takes a good picture when they’re frustrated.
